Like most of my peers, I would love to go back to my childhood days where I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

Life was easy, everything was provided for, and perhaps all I was concerned about was getting good grades.

Just kidding, my childhood wasn’t all that rosy.

With “Dad” declaring his bankruptcy on my 7th birthday, it felt like my life fell apart.

They say that money is the root of all evil. Well, I definitely experienced that first-hand.

“Dad” would harass my mom for money to buy cigarettes and alcohol, and come home drunk almost every night. Fights would break out and sometimes these fights got very physical.

It was a traumatic experience for my brother and I who were very young then and that left a very lasting impact on me.

At that point in time, I thought that all problems would be solved if we had enough money. We would be happier; we would be carefree; and maybe we would be together again.

In order not to add on to the burden faced by my mom, I always strived to do well in whatever I do.

Therefore, since young, I told myself that the most important thing in my life was to make my mom proud. For all that she has suffered and given up for my family, I will do whatever it takes to provide her with a better life.

I have always had an interest in this industry due to the fact that my very own family failed in financial planning, and had to struggle to make ends meet.

Hence, in my 3rd year in NUS, I turned down 2 other internship opportunities to enter one with AIA.

It was then when I met Odyssey – where everyone had their own story to tell and no one is afraid of sharing.

It was through this team that I felt I could impact more lives through financial planning and perhaps save families from going through the experience I had. It was here that I found more meaning, and a special connection.

I met Marissa, who is also my mentor, in June 2018.

It hasn’t been that long but she has impacted my life in ways I could never have imagined.

Marissa shares a very similar background as me. She has proven that if she can succeed, so can I.

Right now, on top of making my mom proud, I want to make her proud as well.

In this industry, there will be many ups and downs. But what I know for sure, I will stay true to my values and serve my clients with my utmost sincerity.

I’m Xenia and let me guide you through your life’s adventure.
