Story

I’ve always felt that I’m a very fortunate person and I’ve honestly led a fairly comfortable life so far. But I’d never known how blessed I was until I faced my first major setback in life.

Growing up, I used to love playing basketball as a hobby, I was never really the best player (partly because of my height), but I enjoyed the game, nonetheless. However, I had always had some issues with the muscles in my knees and often felt sore or uncomfortable after a game. I tried many things to cure this ‘muscle pain’ including stretching, wearing a knee guard and even going for acupuncture sessions. These solutions evidently didn’t work as the dull pain never went away, I was frustrated sometimes but I learned to live with it, thinking it would eventually go away.

Fast forward a few years and I had the opportunity to go see a professional due to National Service, it wasn’t as if I didn’t try to go see a doctor before, it was just never serious enough for me or my parents to care about finding a specialist. Since I had the chance to do a free MRI scan on my knee, I thought ‘Why not?’ and that was probably the single best decision of my life so far. After the scan, the doctors called me in and explained that they had found a malignant tumour in my right knee. Basically, I was diagnosed with cancer. I know it sounds really bad, but the doctors assured me that it was a small problem since the tumour didn’t grow excessively, and a simple surgery was enough to solve the problem.

Well… they were almost right. Eventually, I had to undergo 2 surgeries over a period of more than half a year with multiple check-ups and many other medical expenses which created a huge bill that I fortunately did not have to pay. The reason being, since I was serving the nation, my medical bills were covered by the government. Thankfully, this entire episode actually didn’t affect me that much, but I gained a new perspective of this issue after I joined the financial services industry.

How I got to be here is coincidence as well, since I was suddenly approached by my friendly manager, Leonard, who encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and take an opportunity to increase my financial literacy, while earning some income on the side. At the time, I had the simple mentality of just giving it a shot since I had nothing to lose. Yet, I was once again blessed with a fortuitous meeting with the Odyssey team. Everyone here is so driven and does their work with firm conviction and purpose. As a newbie, I’m awed by their work ethic and their overall positive energy that constantly nourishes me. Through my internship, I’ve come to meet many capable leaders, including the director, Kevin and the many managers in the team, who are always ready to impart their precious experiences.

Looking back at the bills that I didn’t have to pay showed me how lucky my family and I were to dodge that financial burden, since I actually didn’t have any insurance for critical illnesses at the time. My experiences have taught me a valuable lesson on the importance of a financial safety net and how at risk my family’s financial situation was. Thus, in the process of doing my job, I’ve helped my family cover the holes in their financial portfolio and started to build my own. The people here have truly opened my eyes to the importance of this industry and the responsibility that I as a financial consultant hold towards all my clients.

Right now, I feel gratitude towards all who have helped me in my journey so far and hope to cultivate the right values in order to contribute to my team’s vision of changing the biased perception of this industry.

My name is Aedrie and I hope you’ll join me together in my journey to guide you through life’s many adventures.
