Story

In the eyes of many, people often think that I lead a lavish lifestyle, simply because I own many things.

I always equip myself with the latest and gears, and people think that at such a young age, I probably am taking money from my parents to do so.

However, that is not that case.
Since primary school, my parents would only provide me $10 per week.

For most people, this is more than enough to survive.

But for me, merely surviving does not satisfy me. I often find myself at a shortfall and that frustrates me.

That prompted me to become resourceful and one of the most efficient ways to do so was to buy and sell.

I managed to source for a supplier selling gaming cards at a fraction of the price of what others were buying at. Through this method, I managed to make a fortune at the age of 11.

What surprised me through these experiences was that it wasn’t the money earned that fulfilled me, but rather the relationships with my customers that I forged along the way.

It was one of the proudest moments I had during my childhood because it gave me assurance that I was growing up well and moving in the right direction.

However, things changed as I progress into Secondary School.

I landed myself into the Singapore Sports School and that reshaped my goals.

I focused a lot on sports and it became my main priority at that time.

I had attained a fair bit of achievements and my studies were decent as well.

Everything seemed to be headed in the right direction but alas, I was wrong.

I was not ready for what was to come in Polytechnic.

Poly required us to be independent and it turned out that I wasn’t.

I did poorly in my first semester and had difficulty climbing back up. It was mainly due to the fact that in Sports School, I was spoon fed previously and did not even realise it.

I lost the ability to be independent and was relying too much on external aids.
My parents were eventually called up and it was not a pleasant experience.

As embarrassing as it was, it was a good slap in the face by reality. I decided to sacrifice my career in sports and focused on my studies instead.

I put all my effort on the next semester and the results showed some improvement.

Sadly, it wasn’t enough. My GPA was still below average. Some subsequent forecasts and calculations led me to realise that even if I were to score well throughout the remaining of my Poly years, it would still be subpar at best.

Knowing the hard truth caused me to drop into a deep spiral of depression and I was truly affected by it. I didn’t think that my one mistake could potentially ruin my university opportunities.

I often questioned myself if there was a need to continue working hard since my grades weren’t going to go far anyway.

Thankfully, a new opportunity soon came into light. The time for internships came and we were all dispatched to various companies, mine being Great Eastern.

While i was there, I was tasked to do menial errands for the most part. As small as my contributions were, I must have done something right.

Eventually, one of the directors came up to me and offered me the opportunity to become a financial advisor.

It truly came as a surprise to me.

I thought hard about it and realised that this could be my saving grace.

I passed all the necessary certifications but it was not long later that I had to serve my National Service.

During NS, I had a lot of time to think. I wondered if being an Insurance Agent was the right thing for me.

Despite bringing me into the industry, my old director did not give me any guidance as to how to progress in the business.

In the last few months of my service, my dad happened to mention to me about a friend of his who had a son who was doing well in the industry.

I soon agreed to meet up with him and went to his office to have a short sharing session.

Through this session, it truly opened my eyes to the industry. The level of professionalism portrayed gave me a lasting impression and it completely eliminated the stigma I had for Insurance Agents. I never knew they could be seen in a different light and i was really impressed by it.

Most of all, it reignited my childhood passion of communicating with people. The smile that was on my face as I left the office happened subconsciously and ever since that day, i knew what i wanted to do in life.

It’s funny how life takes you. You never really know where you are going, but at some point, you do.

It is only through the decisions I made in life that led me to the fateful meet up. And only through that meet up, was I able to find my passion.

Today, I am a full fledged financial consultant, and I will continue to strive for that level of professionalism that leaves a smile on many faces in time to come.

While working with Benjamin during our NS times, I’ve observed that he is very efficient and meticulous in finding out the minute details of the tasks that were assigned. He would always find ways to simplify and explain any content or lessons amongst his peers, such that it would be easy to absorb. I feel that these qualities are as important aspects of what I look out from a financial consultant.

Benjamin explained the benefits of having a savings plan thoroughly to me. In addition, he wasn’t hard selling any plans, but made sure that the plans he offered were beneficial for me and catered to my needs.

Benjamin explained the savings plan really well and is a good agent that went down every single
detail and is willing to take the time and effort to ensure that I fully understand the plan.
