My Personal Story

My journey with Odyssey began when I realized that starting a career in financial services allows me to closely interact with clients while imparting important financial knowledge.

Just like you, I was once filled with skepticism towards the financial service industry. It is easy to be swayed by the stereotype that the financial service industry is a dubious line of work when people around you share personal accounts of agents using aggressive and deceptive marketing strategies.

However, one question piqued my interest – how can this industry remain so prosperous for decades if the whole thing is one big sham?

During my internship with Odyssey, I learnt about the value of each and every financial product offered by the company as well as the legitimacy of the industry. For instance, I understood the ingenious concept of risk pooling and risk transfer used in insurance products as well as how investment products offered by financial service industry is managed in a way that is simply impossible for an everyday retail investor like you and I to replicate.

I also understood that the reason many people have such a negative experience with the industry is either because they were not able to fully understand the value of the financial products they bought, or the purpose of the financial product does not align with the need of the customer. It has nothing got to do with the products being priced or crafted unfairly.

That being said, I have also learnt the reason behind all the negative selling and unpleasant experiences many people might have met. As an industry that deals with sales, it will inevitably face with problems such as unethical marketing and advertising.

While there have been significant improvements in terms of the regulation of the industry, there is simply no way to micro-managed every single individual’s action. Very often, a bad financial service experience stems from advisors either not doing his or her due diligence in explaining all the features and conditions of the products or overselling products beyond the client’s needs and capability to fund for it. This will result in failed claims or termination of the clients existing policies which is a big loss to them.

However, this does not dismiss the fact that financial planning is pivotal to your well-being. Therefore, it is my role to help you understand what you are getting in to and be there for you to clarify every single query you might have on the way.

A little bit about myself, I graduated for Hwa Chong Institution, served my national service as a naval diver and I am currently studying Finance in the Singapore Management University.

I pride myself on my determination to strive for my goals in things that I am passionate for. I was a middle-distance runner and won multiple competitions, self-learnt piano to a level where I can attempt diploma grade songs and many other little “checklists” of mine.

I do not see myself as a competitive person because I truly seek joy in trying to scale new heights together with like-minded individual. I tend to excel in things I love to do especially in the presence of friendly competition which is the reason I am extremely grateful to be in a team of elites who strives to become the crème of the crop in the industry. It sets a perfect environment for me to strive for excellence in my newfound passion.

I love to teach, to help people who wants to learn and to teach things that matters to and benefits the recipient. I have the affinity to this aspect partly because of the influence from my grandparents who here both high school and university professors for mathematics and physics back when they were teaching in China.

It’s not like I am the most knowledgeable around, but on many occasions, the sense of fulfilment comes from being able to break down difficult concepts into simple and easy to understand explanations or analogy that caters my friends for them to digest the information.

Similarly, I am able help you convince yourself to make an informed decision with regards to your personal finance.

I am a social person, even though I am introverted based on the 16-personality test. The reason I am drawn to this career is because of the opportunity to interact with new people on a personal level daily and it makes me happy.

I believe that these qualities will be my motivation to bring a new light of the industry to people around me. I pledged myself to help my clients to not just understand the importance and urgency of personal financial planning but also who and what they are really dealing with.

With me, financial planning will not be transactional, but educational and relational.
