Hello, I’m Sherrill, and I graduated from Loughborough University with a First Class Honours in Business Studies.
My results gave me a wide variety of career paths to choose from, but Financial Consulting was always my first choice.
I have often been asked by my friends, “Why this job?” Well, it’s because of two reasons— my parents, and my Grandpa.
My parents have been a big influence in my life. Their constant emphasis on valuing hard work is the reason why I earned my academic achievements.
However, the biggest influence they had on me was through their actions. Despite not having much, they were always kind and compassionate to people in need.
Growing up, I observed their little actions of treating meals to homeless people or going out of their way to help others. And as I grew older, I soon realised their values started to take shape in me.
I recall that there was this time in university when my Chinese classmate confided in me about the difficulties she faced in understanding our Economics module due to the language barrier.
After translating the entire lecture notes to Mandarin, I tutored her as well. All of which was done a week before our exam. It all paid off when she received an A for that subject.
But the key factor that led me to this industry was none other than my grandfather.
I remember how he would always hold my hands, ask me how I was doing, and sharing his life stories with me, telling me to work hard and to give 100% in everything I do.
Unfortunately, during my teens, he contracted a severe illness. Without insurance, his care options were very limited. I saw how the illness consumed him before my eyes, yet I couldn’t do anything about it.
He was no longer the energetic and cheerful man that raised me. As I watched him deteriorate, I’ve never felt so helpless in my life before.
I had often wondered if we had the foresight to have purchased insurance and had taken steps to financially prepare for such events, would my family have been able to avoid such a tragedy? Maybe things would have been much different. Maybe, just maybe, he might still be alive.
The tipping point came when I met Kevin, the Associate Director of Odyssey, AIA. And these 2 things stood out to me:
- His perspective on the importance of Financial Planning and how to impact lives through it.
- He is driven because he also experienced a loss similar to that of my Grandpa.
It was through these series of life experiences that led to where I am now.
Today, I make sure no one has to go through the same pain I struggled with. I make sure that in spite of illness or even death, their loved ones can grief without worrying about the burden of finances, or even their children’s future.
I’m Sherrill, and I’m here to Guide You Through Life’s Adventure.
